A trip to Chichen Itza requires some interest in Maya people, its culture and periods 600-1200 AD. If that's not your flip and you've watched "Apocalypto" or a National Geographic documentary on the ancient civilizations, then you won't have a problem following along this blog.
It's quite a trip from Riviera Maya to get to Chichen Itza - about 3 hrs drive each way. Note the spelling of Chichen Itza (not chicken pizza). There' s nothing to see along the highway except for jungle and shops and make-shifts.

I now appreciate the work of tour guides. Apart from being patient with all kinds of distractions, they must be thorough in their knowledge of the subject matter. We'll call him Samuel, for reference. He was the lead tour guide on this trip to Chichen Itza - one of the new seven wonders of the world - a place I have always wanted to visit - the others being: the Great wall of China, Petra, Machu Pichu, Christ the Redeemer, Colosseum, and Taj Mahal. Dressed just like Indiana Jones in brown lumber boots, wool felt outback fedora, a long sleeve tactical shirt and riata flat front khaki pants, Samuel gave a short history of the Mayan Civilization. They were quite revolutionary and they ipso facto has a claim in the 365 days calendar we use today.

The pyramid in Chichen Itza is quite something and you can read all about it here. What's amazing about the Mayan Calendar, is how they had several different techniques to date a day. Despite the mind-numbing complexities behind it, it is indeed deadly accurate.
